The Gender Pay Gap # Unequal Pay

The gender pay gap is the average difference between the remuneration for men and women who are working. Women are generally considered to be paid less than men.

Not everyone realizes that the gender pay gap is not the same as unequal pay. Unequal pay is one of the potential factors contributing to the gender pay gap. Others include:

➡️ Unequal shares of caring work in the home

➡️ A failure to promote women

➡️ A lack of women entering careers in the STEM field

➡️ Under-valuing of the types of work women do

Regardless of the existence of a country's legislation on equal pay, paying people equally for equal work should be part of ethics . And to make it clear, equal pay isn’t just about gender. There is troubling research relating to ethnicity as well.

Even with the best intentions, organisations need to overcome certain challenges in order to address any inequalities. Some of these challenges are:

➡️ No objective system in place to identify which roles are similar

➡️ Not enough funds to address any inequalities

➡️ Where individuals of one gender or ethnicity are overpaid

Solutions are not always easy. What’s your take on this?
